Who Noemi Thinks She Is

Who do you think you are?

Hello, my name is Noemi. I am an artist, freelance photographer, animal lover (especially cats) and classic gamer.  I currently work as an early childhood educator with experience in ages three months to five years. I've lived a relatively nomadic life but have dominantly lived between Brooklyn and Newark. With that being said, I have drastically reduced my use of media consumption in many forms but have picked up new sources to replace them. For instance, since January 2018, I have chosen to deactivate virtually all of my social media accounts and have found myself to feel less anxious, more focused and deterred from comparing myself to others online. If you have felt this way,  one of the most sage pieces of advice I have read is that people who post on social media only post what they want the public to see; not all that glitters is gold. Many will never show you all the failures it took in order to achieve what they publish.

Prior to my decision to start my social media detox, I used Instagram religiously to connect with other photographers from all over as well as a way to showcase my photographs to other shooters and network. It became a great resource to promote my work and receive a lot of positive recognition. However, these superficial concepts began to overrule my time throughout the day; it was literally consuming hours out of my day for months. After hitting my seasonal slump of uncreativity, I decided it was time to eliminate Instagram from my life and temporarily liberate myself from my social media shackles. The old ball and chain had been dragging me down and I desperately needed some time to focus on the present and plan for the future.

In the strangest way, because of my elimination of social media, I began to rely on new vices. It reincarnated as playing Angry Birds and Animal Crossing on my phone (don't judge me) for hours at a time. The same way we all wake up and eagerly check our social media accounts to see who interacted with our posts while we got some much-needed sleep from the blue screen, was the same way I was excited to open up my game and catch up on what I had missed. The truth is, it seems that regardless we all lack self-control when it comes to our phones. This is the generation who will probably suffer the most from scoliosis and neck strain due to constantly keeping our heads down on our phones; I am unfortunately guilty as charged. I am, however, working on getting better at it and becoming more conscious about my media usage throughout the day. The longer we stare at our screens, the more we miss of the world happening right before our eyes.

Since moving into my dorm over a year ago, I have not had the use of a television on a regular basis (yes, not even on my phone). Unless the news is spreading like wildfire, I usually won't hear about it until days or weeks later or by word of mouth. One of the most recent examples of this was today when I was talking to a coworker this morning and she told me the Marcal factory in Elmwood Park had burned down entirely. The factory had been there since 1932 and had over 1000 workers employed. This was one of the last few standing beacons of industrialization in New Jersey and represented a culture of blue collared immigrant workers who created for a living. Their method of creation was significantly different from what we consider it to be today and genuinely broke my heart to hear and see. Sometimes it begs the question of whether it's better to know or not know these things based on how they make you feel.

Who do you think you are?

Media has been significant all throughout my childhood. My first language was Spanish and therefore I relied heavily on Media to learn English. I didn't have parent, older siblings, or cousins to teach me. Outside of School, I found myself learning from the television and it's shows. As a kid I was addicted to my TV, I was an only child for a long time and there weren't any kids living round me. I was completely attached, in a way it became a distraction. It was so extreme that I often would stay up watching shows, everything from telenovelas to Reba. It was through television that I started to understand the American culture, although today I realize that so many things I thought were true are false.

As I grew older I abandoned the the television, today I barely turn it on and heavily rely on my phone. I wasn't very active on social media, or any other outlet as it didn't have any importance to me. My first presence online was created by my best friend when she took the liberty to create a facebook account for me.  Today, I find myself always checking my phone for new updates and endlessly scrolling through instagram. I get most of my information online, news, events, and even inspirations that I try to incorporate into my own designs.  I can't escape it, it has become a replacement to the TV from my childhood.

Being part of the Design world, Social Media plays a huge role as it acts as self promotion to many designers. It's extremely important to showcase our work online as it acts as a portfolio, an easy access for potential clients to view a designer's style. There is a whole design world online, a big part of being a designer is knowing what's trending and the new movements taking place, in order to do this I must always be present online. However,  it also has a negative perspective as It can leave one feeling discouraged by comparing one self to another. There are small periods when I turn off my phone to take mental breaks, or else i'll find it hard to immerse myself into my own designs after viewing countless others.

https://www.craftedbygc.com/how-has-social-media-shaped-contemporary-design/

I have started to realize I that want to take part in creating new media consumption, but I want to create art that changes the way media is portrayed. I want to make an impact, even if it's small, I want to know that I had an influence on what the media portrays for future generations. I want to showcase different cultures and promote unity.  I want to show what American culture really is, provide future children like myself with a truthful experience.

Teaching others my passion

As a graphic designer who is in his junior year, really got to play a huge role in media. It began when the first Oculus virtual reality came out, I was very fascinated by that technology and gave me the urge to pursue it and learn all about it. I started by volunteering at the 3D form design lab and the form design studio. When I began volunteering I had so little information about the 3d design world. The more and more time I volunteered the more I learned about how 3d designing and printing worked, and how that 3d technology was evolving. After a while, of volunteering in the form design lab and studio, the director offered me a job to work as lab technician which came with a lot of responsibilities, which I was fortunate to have. Some of the responsibilities were to host workshops for the public of Newark to teach them some 3d technics. I also teach high school students how to 3d design and 3d printing. Teaching others my passion and to get them excited about it is what really makes me happy.

Another project that I got involved in through the form design studio at express Newark was collecting data from historical architectural buildings from Newark. Recently I got to scan the Krueger Scott Mansion on MLK. Newest American at Express Newark asked the form design lab to help scan the mansion before they renovate the mansion. The Form Design lab agreed and placed me in charge of gathering all of the photos of every inch of the mansion. My job is to gather every picture from the mansion and stitch it together in a program so it can be viewed in a virtual reality so that the place can be viewed and always remembered.

If it wasn't for my interest in the virtual reality and how it gave me an urge to learn all about the 3d world, I would not have been who I am today. Volunteering for the 3d form design lab at express Newark, changed me and basically changed what I thought I wanted to do in my life, changing my major from a bio to a graphic designer.

Media In My Life

For me, a lot of my media consumption comes through fashion. I use a lot of my media to look at clothing brands, different styles, and new trends. As a result of this, I end up purchasing brands and clothing to show off this style. Also, I have subscribed to several companies and I am used for marketing by promoting their products through my own social media. In exchange, I get discounts, a percentage given back to me after an amount of money is made, and free products. Another way is by my position in my club at school. I am responsible for sending information out to the whole club and others to talk about current events and new things going on. I use the media to send out this information to everyone. I know that getting the information out through social media is reliable so I use it to connect people with information.

I make many flyers for my club so posting and sharing information through social media is very common. My club is with the radio station and I am constantly around music and mixing new tracks. We also have artists from our campus composing music through our station and publicize their work on our page as well. On some of the radio shows they will promote their own events or events they will be attending through their podcasts. For publicizing the information, I turn to Instagram a lot. I can reach a huge number of people because they will watch the story and know what new things are happening at the radio station.

Media is a huge part of my life. I am constantly connecting with people and working with social media. Also, I am a journalism and video production major which are two fields that are filled with a constant flow of social media. Journalism is always being looked at when you open Instagram and see new posts about things happening in the world whether it be celebrities, sports, politics, or science. Video production also revolves around media because it is used to have people visually see the media being exposed to them. For my profession, I know the media will be close to me at all times because I will be providing content to the public.

I hope to be able to create documentaries and merge both journalism and video production together. When recording and creating the documentary, I have to keep in mind how the public will see the story I am making. Because I will become the media, I need to make sure my message is clear and not ever missed. Many times the media showing something and it is taken the wrong way. There have been pictures taken out of context and stories have been formed from an innocent situation interpreted the wrong way.

Who Do I Think I Am

I think I am a lot of things. Media has made who i am, and will continue to shape who i become, and i think the same can be said about everyone. I have always been introspective in my consumption of media. I am never satisfied with simply accepting things on a surface level. Youtube and Wikipedia has provided me with so much information over the years that i feel like my brain is about to overload. but its funny, because i think this media overload has made so many people dumber, insecure, and less productive, but i can honestly say its had the opposite effect on people like me.

I say this because the type of media that i indulge in dives deep into topics like philosophy, psychology, history, and self improvement. But I am not saying this in a self righteous way, because most of the philosophy and history i search for has to do with cartoons and movies, especially dragon ball z. i find that youtube has been a platform for so many communities of people to critique, communicate, and collaborate, over shared interests no matter how specific.

Recently Instagram has also allowed me to network with so many artists and people of similar interests around the world and has opened my eyes to a world of possibilities and opportunities. It has given me direction and support in the art and media i create and share. However it isn't without its faults, with all the positives also comes the negative. Scammers and liars are not new to the internet and media but their techniques are. The amount of misinformation i see shared, reposted, and repeated is just one google search away from a fact check but the fake news epidemic has most of us infected and its hard to tell whats even real anymore.

In conclusion, i find my interests in media and what i search has allowed me to decipher what is good media and what is bad media. Although media is an amazing tool, it can be harmful to future generations and create unrealistic expectations. Therefore I will try to remain truthful and honest in my art and image so i do not contribute to the negativity of the media and inspire others to make this world a better one.

Introduction Post

Hello, my name is Ron. I would say I have a pretty active role in media consumption, critique, and making. I am constantly online searching for visuals in media that help inspire me and share them with my colleagues as well. I often find myself critiquing the work I see online as well, sharing your insight with others about their work really does help create a space for growth. I am also an artist and I am often uploading my own artwork online. A lot of my artwork is inspired by the work I see every day, from the DJ's and producers I see to the painters and photographers I follow.

I usually share the work of artists that I like on my social media pages all the time. The media is a vital thing to me, it's my connection to the world outside of my small bubble in New Jersey, it connects me to artists and visuals that constantly inspire me and further my drive as an artist. I wouldn't know much about anything without the media in its form through my television, phone, and computer. The media has always held importance to my identity because that's how I've been able to build myself, without it, I would have been ignorant about a great deal of who I am now. Media has helped to reassure my identity as I was able to find people who were like-minded.

The media fits into the sense of my future with its constant wave of information and connection to the world. The media constantly gives me a look at what people are doing now in terms of art, it's constantly spreading visual information and helping me understand the world and where it's heading towards. Media has given me a good sense of what I can identify everything with and teaches me about the world so that I can be well informed for the challenges of everyday life. I never really clicked with books or reading until two years ago, so a lot of my experience and information came purely from the media. The media has served and continued to serve a vital role in my life in so many aspects.

My connection to imagery is one with much appreciation, I am constantly in need of visuals. Visuals are my drive and its what renews my love for art and expression every day. A lot of the art I have done has come from things I've seen online and artists that I follow. My connection to my identity is something that I feel like I dont appreciate too much. I personally dont feel much connection to where I come from, its only some aspects of my identity that become prominent enough for me to appreciate during certain times in my life. I dont think there's any part of my identity that I always  feel a deep connection to, except for maybe being a Leo, but I usually use that as a joke. I don't feel much connection to my culture either, I appreciate all aspects of my culture but they are not prominent enough in my daily life.

Who do I think I am?

As far as media consumption goes, I'd say I'm typical for my generation. I consume a ton of media via the usual places: Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, as well as various video and audio streaming services. I don't personally critique much unless I'm asked to (which isn't often despite being part of a group of artists), but I draw and produce music and tend to post my favorite works onto the Internet. Granted, I could benefit from being more active in that regard.

A self portrait without a reference.
A self-portrait, drawn without a reference.

I would say that a fairly large amount of what I consume is shared art, but I'm not really sure what makes something a "media event." Still, I'd wager that I view plenty of those, even if I'm unaware. As far as the media's place in my identity and life, it takes up a huge part. I don't think I could function if I was to completely disconnect for longer than like a day, I'd be bored out of my mind. What is there to do if I'm not even allowed to read, let alone watch or listen to something? Hell, a lot of my identity now is what I consume-- especially the music, art, and what I watch (mostly NBA basketball).

I'm not sure what I'd even talk to people about, like if at the beginning of the conversation I said, "Oh, uh, I've been avoiding all forms of media for a long time, so could we just stick to topics outside of the news, the Internet, music, television, movies, and anything else interesting?" That level of disconnectedness is damn near being Amish in 2019. The culture demands that you stay connected to some degree, and if you aren't, you'll find day-to-day social experiences pretty confusing. Either way, I'm an artist, so I can't exactly stop using social media or viewing other forms of media. That'd be shooting myself in the foot.

For that reason, I think all artists have to include media in their own image. It's nearly impossible to stop it from manifesting in your work in some way, and just as hard (harder, really) to gain exposure while being truly averse to the media. You don't have to like it, but it can't be ignored in this era. It's better to embrace the fact that everything is at our fingertips.

Hello my name is...

...Nadya, and as a designer and photographer I find myself relying on the visuals most of my time. Recently, I found myself fully attached to the social media and the things that it produces. I discovered that by doing the opposite, going to the vacation without my phone. For 3 whole weeks I did not produce anything on the media, I did not consume, I did not participate in the products of social media. I was completely unaware of anything happening in the visual world of design and photography, I did not see what my friends were sharing, and most importantly for me, I did not share anything myself. When I was going through this challenge, I discovered how much time in the day I actually have to make art, to just observe the world around, to live even through the boring times, like waiting for the bus, without plugging myself into the media. By the end I felt truly amazing existing outside of the media life, that of course, has its own benefits. When I came back, I realized that social media is an awesome tool to share your experiences and give feedback to others like-minded people or critique things that don't always make sense, to get inspired and motivated, to influence others. Media holds a great power, knowing that almost everyone is plugged into it at any free moment, it makes it impossible to destroy. BUT sometimes, I wish to live outside of that big influence, having only phone numbers of important, in my life, people, and enjoy the life that that we are given only once.

I constantly shoot photos. My camera is my best friend, and now, I feel like it's a part of who I am. Camera allows not only to capture the beauty of life, it allows me to share my vision with others. Through Instagram I share my vision and hope to find people who acknowledge and appreciate my posts, although in my mind I know, that I'm not doing it for others, but for myself. Luckily or unfortunately, media makes us strive for popularity or fame. I use media trying to promote my work, to make it be out there in space, rather than just saved in my folder on a laptop. I use Instagram platform to share what I have and at the same time receive another wave of inspiration and different visions. Media connects us by allowing to reach our friends on the other side of the world, but it also separates us from the people physically present next to us. Sometimes a person on the phone looks just like a lonely camper, with the light inside of the tent shedding only the inside, similar to the phone screen shining bright without shedding light on anything physically surrounding us.

Social media eats time out of every day. And the problem that many of us face, including me, is that we forget to live in the now, even in the most boring moments of our life. We don't allow time for self-reflection or just simple casual thinking. During these "boring moments" when we have nothing to do, we try to fill up our brains with the overflow of news, images and sounds. We forget to give our brains time to just wander or process things. Media is constantly present in our lives, and is part of the modern culture. But I feel like we need to go back 100 years ago where people were more present in the physical world and embrace the ordinary in life again. It's funny I say that since media existed for so many centuries be it TV or newspapers or radio. All of these things were and are essential in order to know what is happening in the world around us. It sheds light into events that happen miles away and connects people in that sense.

By writing this I came to conclusion that I have mixed feelings toward media and its influence on our lives. On one hand, I appreciate it as a source of inspiration, news about current events, and a place to share my art, photography and vision. But on the other, it separates us from the reality of life and from other people present in it. It is definitely part of my culture and some part of sharing my work out there is a part of my identity, but I want co change something about that, or at least to be more conscious on the dependance on the non-stoppable flow of the imagery I see on daily and allow my brain to process info.

P.S: Photo taken by me during one of the best days of summer, when I existed outside of social media influence.

My Media Obsession. (Who Do I Think I Am?)

My role in media consumption lies throughout my daily usage of YouTube, Instagram, Medium, and a plethora of other informative sites. A great deal of my experience involves processing information while updating various ideas and beliefs pertaining to what is or isn't attractive, normal, or recognizable. As a filmmaker, writer, and photographer I am determined to stay informed.

Beautiful Thoughts (Original photo taken by me.)

Whether it's creating content for my YouTube channel, or writing blogs expressing my personal opinion, my daily usage of media seems almost impossible to ignore during these modern times. Another reason I find my self browsing the web is due to my need to network and connect with the most intriguing individuals who are associated with my field of interest.

Certainly, media fits into my life, due to my love for the creative arts as well as my need to make an impact. The numerous groups and businesses that I follow assist me to stay informed. Certainly, if I didn't have a Facebook account it would be insanely difficult to keep track of them. Referring back to my YouTube channel, most of my subscriptions are relative to fashion and grooming, which coincides with my channel's content.

Social media sites, such as Facebook, and Twitter have made it tremendously effortless to reconnect with friends and family even after decades of being detached. Amazingly enough meeting people from all over the world, who are also fascinated by various topics of my interest is satisfying, to say the least.

Who Do I Think I Am ?

My name is Tyren Crowley, and I am a art curator. As an art curator I specialize in music production, graphic design and photography. Most of my days are spent listening to beat instrumentals to get the juices flowing, feeling the sound, and then designing art or taking a snapshot to make the memories last.

As for a media consumer, YouTube is my best friend and worst enemy. I spend probably 5 hours a day minimum on the social media sight discovering any and everything involving art and knowledge. Its basically my professor out of college (YouTube University). Instagram comes in second as far as media consumption, where I can see whats trending or what my friends/family have going on with themselves. But its also the most distracting site in my opinion, so I try to stay away.

Media fits well into my life because it helps me stay in the know of whats going on, along with the world staying in the know with me. Life's about sharing experiences so the media is there for that. But, it can also have its cons too. We live in the age of spin. What i mean by that is we see so much going on just in 10 mins of social media that it can overwhelm the brain, so take everything slowly, login at your own risk.

As for the future, I plan on taking photography to a professional level, involving the car scene , music events , food etc. Graphic design would be more for illustrative purposes. Finally for music, I'm going to be the greatest music producer alive. Speaking it now.

CAP LETTERS TO MAKE YOU READ THIS

So where do I start? I am just another consumer when it comes to media. I go through many media platforms, you name it: Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Twitch. Just another number that travels through multiple numerical codes into the universe we call The Internet. Although I go through many platforms, I would not say that I throw a big impact on the world, I'm just a pebble that roams the streets of Newark. As sad as that sounds, I do not mind it. To me, it is just how the world works.

Oh, where are my manners? My name is Frederick Lee and I am just your casual half Mexican and half Korean boy, pleased to meet you! I'd like to say that I have a Youtube channel that I like to post up things once and a while, such as skit videos and animation videos. Which brings us to our next topic. How is this going to affect my future? Well, you see, I am planning to be a video production major, and I feel the practice of handling a camera has made be grown to be a good filmer. I already have a job at Newark Express and a strong connection to other companies.

Enough of me, let's talk about my culture. I was raised up in a Hispanic household since my parents got separated and which again, I do not mind, it is how life works. It was not too bad, my mother loved me and I will always appreciate that--Off topic. So I guess you can say I'm more culture in the Hispanic side than my Korean side. But what I find amusing is that I lived at a Korean town where their culture would smack you across the face with their fancy characters on hair salons, restaurants, and cafes... like a lot of cafes... So I guess you can say both my Korean and Mexican cultures were fulfilled at its finest.

Back to media. I'd say that it has its pros and cons, it is usually up to the protagonists of their own stories of how they will use it. Now listen, media has its own algorithm and that is how they expand, but the more they expand the more consumers there will be, and I am not saying that it is a bad thing, but it could lead up to a bad future for all of us. Consuming too much of the media can probably destroy our reality we call Life. So stop reading this and go outside and have fun! Unless it's cold outside...

Who Do You Think You Are (Response)

.
Media has played an advocate role in peolpe’s lives. It has made it possible to find new and exciting stuff outside of my realm. When it comes to my own research a big part of my life has been both entertainment and consumerism. Through my adolescence, I’ve had a limited vocabulary. Though I was born in this country, my parents did not. I was taught a different language. I’ve had to always be placed in special programs due to my limited vocabulary that I was not exposed at home.

I took to visuals as form of learning. It was like a universal language. It started with the use of television. It became a very important role to get feedback at the right moment in right time. After that, whenever I was away from the television, I looked for other visuals which led me to be consumed by magazines that would be in stores.I became more attached to visual media like television, magazine and eventually the internet.

What strikes more is the big bold headliners. Especially when there are many events happening it causes myself to be notified to something quick and important. When it comes to having career in the arts, it’s very important to keep up to what is new and innovating; meaning that I have to continue to see what is new in trends, and aware of certain events taken place.

Speaking for myself, I tend to lean forward things that were more universal. For example, I would always find artists/photographers that have works that will be liked by others. I would also put pieces of my artwork through media platforms to get exposure out. It allows me to find a certain style that I am doing. It also allows me to feedback about how other people understand the work.

Who Do You Think You Are?

I constantly find myself using many forms of social media. I rarely post on the platforms but still find myself spending hours scrolling through the many feeds and stories filled with content of not only my friends, but people I don’t know. Usually if something happens, it ends up on social media. I find myself being up to date on the most current trends and events. Being on social media there isn’t much reading involved because everything posted on these platforms are mostly images and videos.

I am a graphic designer and being that I see myself observing and seeing things posted online in a different way. When ads pop up on screens or just simply looking at a nice photograph someone posted online; I find myself silently critiquing these things. Is the ad successful in catching my attention or making even press on it? How was this photo taken, what camera, what settings, and where?

Media is a source of inspirations for many. Almost always, when I am assigned something to do or just want to work on a personal project, I do a Google search looking for inspiration. Media is something everyone in my opinion depends on. We don’t see it, but if we turn off social media for a day, everyone will feel like they have so much time in the day because they don’t have anything to pass the time.

Media is both positive and negative in our society. Positively it can keep us alert and aware of the events around us, spread awareness, or raise money. Negatively, people get addicted to it and influence each other through it. Someone does something dumb or irresponsible then posts it on instagram then gets a ton amount of likes. Suddenly, 10 other people are doing the same thing looking to get just as much attention. The future of it can either be good, bad, or both. We have 10 year olds on social media now with smartphones, when in my childhood I tied up the phone line to get on the internet. Media has changed dramatically and will continue too.

Who Do I Think I Am?

I have a long history with media that mostly stem from my younger years. In my youth, television was the center of all my family functions. We spent many hours sitting in front of the television as it was a cultural norm in my community. We’d watch television to learn of the violence that was happening around us, to be updated about our favorite celebrities, or to record a favorite movie or soap opera. Most people in my neighborhood couldn’t afford cable tv and had no other alternative outside of off-air broadcasting or “regular” tv, so we all watched the same things. I learned at an early age “to do what others do” when it came to media.

This mentality followed me for many years. Today, there seems to be more cons than pros when watching television since it mostly displays more negative things in the world than good. I’ve tried to keep up with everyone by joining all major social media outlets. However, I have learned along my journey that being a big media consumer often gets in the way of my daily duties. Currently, I try to avoid social media unless it’s necessary for school or a job; I often find myself checking my Instagram or snapchat account only to not feel “left out.

It is somewhat of a battle in choosing what media to consume outside of social media. Mostly, I search for respectable, informative, yet entertaining media outlets. I’m a musician and frequently listen to music, watch YouTube videos, but stay away from the television unless I can control what is on the screen. Netflix is my go-to for binging on informative docuseries, this saves me from being subjected to unwanted news.

Altogether, I believe media is needed to keep me informed and updated about what’s happening around me. It has its advantages in my life as well as its disadvantages. I am learning new ways to adjust and accept its role in my life. The smart way, I’ve figured, is to balance my consumption of it, yet not let it consume all of me. It has its place, but it doesn’t control me.

Who do you think you are?

My name is Brandon Ramdayal, and this is who I think I am. With the many forms of media that revolve around me, there are a variety of ways how I consume it. Some of these ways include spending countless hours on my phone on Instagram scrolling through my feed, occasionally double tapping a picture or video I like, watching shows, reading news articles or watching/listening to news broadcasts, live sports or highlights, or streaming movies via Netflix. It is very easy to enter the "rabbit hole" of media and digress to different topics and subjects with a swipe or a scroll. As a big consumer of media, I try not to do that, but I still find doing that without even thinking about it.

As I enter the world of Journalism and Video Production, I realize that I have the potential to provide content that will go the same platforms that I use on a daily basis. My role in media making will be to create content that will help people be more informed and entertained. I see myself as a visual storyteller, and I hope to provide the public with valuable information that they can discuss in whatever field I'm tasked to report on. I'm slowly but surely making strides in becoming the best visual storyteller that I can be, by providing visual content for my class whether it be in the form of an article I write for class or a video I make and post on my YouTube channel (Link will be below). I also just began to be a part of a digital magazine that discusses the arts of Newark.

In the world that we live in, finding your identity is one of the toughest things you can do, especially with the overwhelming amount of media that you receive daily. However, I try to find my own identity through my experiences or finding my own beliefs based on research from all perspectives. What this does for me is that it helps me find my identity, and not what the media want me to be. When it comes to culture, this gets tricky for me being born in America with Guyanese background. This is tricky for me because I'm constantly wondering whether I'm American or Guyanese, not speaking with a Guyanese accent or simply being out of touch with my culture because of my American lifestyle and ultimately being shunned by my family back in Guyana solely due to my choice to not talk or carry myself a certain way. I hope to acquire a better sense of my culture as I learn more in this class.

For me, the future seems bright as I have a variety of opportunities that I have yet to discover. I plan to graduate from Rutgers in a few semesters, but there are a few obstacles that stand in my way. One of them is this class, which I hope will be an easy one to overcome, another is acquiring internships applicable to Journalism and Video Production and of course, passing my other classes. I hope to find a career in Journalism or Video Production when I graduate so I could begin to not only begin to pay off my loans but to find my true passion in these fields. I hope that this class will help me be more in tune with my identity and better shape my future.

Link:http://journalismresearchnews.org/article-social-media-affects-the-journalistic-process-on-all-levels/ Being a Journalism major, I see myself playing a visual and informative role in the media. My main purpose is to bring issues to light as well as inform the public about events that are currently happening. Most of my experience with the media involves shared art and events. For example, I find myself on the Instagram observing artist profiles and news events. In regards to news events, I read comments to learn about other people opinions on topics. Therefore, media fits into my life as a source to inform and expose me to things that I can connect with by observing. For instance, watching a live stream of an event is helpful for me because I can grasp a sense of what’s going on and connect to the event as if I was actually there. Not only through video and movement, but photography as well. I can view historic events, captivating art pieces, fashion events, and many other aspects by just using media platforms. On the other hand, media shapes my identity because I can share my experiences, express opinions, and content with the world. I can use media as a way to show who I am without having to communicate verbally. Regardless of whether people agree with my opinion, I could talk about issues using facts, share art or informative videos that are important to me. In addition, I can learn about cultures that are different from my own. When events such as Mardi Gras and others are highlighted in the media, I feel compelled to learn more. As technology evolves, I think I will continue to be interested in the visual and information aspect of media. I will use media as a tool to discover, share, and absorb information.

Who Are You?

Most of my media consumption nowadays is either watching a show or movie on Netflix, or trying to make sense of what’s happening in the world through news media apps. In today’s world, it is very hard not to absorb some sort of media, as it seems that every major company in the country is attempting to grab our attention. Even politics are being treated the same as corporate America, with the left and the right acting as rival companies doing everything in their power to serve the ideals of their base.

As a graphic designer, I am also an image maker and will more than likely be involved in the machine that churns out some sort of media every day that fights for your attention like major corporations and political avenues do today. The difference however is that I do hope to create imagery and media that brings social change, or at least inspires a worthwhile conversation that impacts our future. Aside from professional endeavors, I also do my best to find time to make personal work, which I share to Instagram almost every week

However, I do not allow media to define my life in anyway. Everything that I see, either on TV or my phone through an app, or on a billboard or magazine in a dentist office is always taken in with a grain of salt. I base my identity on the things I believe in through my own research, and try to piece together how I view things based on my own experiences versus what’s happening in the real world. I do have some concern for our future, as more people seem to willingly distract themselves from what’s happening in the real world with reality TV shows or selfies on social media.

I do hope that with the election of Donald Trump and everything that is going on with the American government now will bring some awareness to people and inspiration to pay more attention to the media that is being put out there, and formulate their own opinions outside of it. Hopefully the country has learned from such a mistake, and we can move forward in truly making America great again.
Who do You Think You Are?

I don't consider myself a avid consumer of any particular media . Most commentary or all commentary if published will eventually come back to bite you in the tush. Why? Because although you are entitled to your opinion, not all people will agree and be respectful of your opinion. If your thick skinned that may not matter. But with me, I try and stay quiet about some things I think are going on around this world. You never know, what if you were texting something and it got into the wrong hands!

top 30 funniest wrong number texts

See! Sometimes you never know and look what can happen with the most innocent texts..... Just a text can go wrong ! So be careful what you write as it might get into the wrong hands.

Now , I've never been against being in a movie or a video to promote a product if I believed in it and the product wasn't going to, in some way, hurt someone somehow. For example I once was part of a thing called a (Filler). Maybe you've never heard of one of these? A filler is a little movie , so to speak or a commentary, in this case about a product you promote. There's camera men and you step in and say your piece about the product. In my case it was a comment about some high end condominiums and town homes I was helping to sell. The producer of such small films take the film and try and sell it to a big network as a fill in for some blank space time between one show on TV to the next major TV program. Hence the name "fill in". There is no guarantee that your little film will make the cut in between programs though, and in my case the one I helped make didn't make the cut . These little film production companies typically make several of these little movies about various products and there s no guarantee that your film is going to make the cut to get in between the major programs. But the advertising is a freebie for your product ,in this case townhouses and town homes.

Also I had a small part in a B rated film once but all I did was sit in a car and just be a body in a car in a drive in movie. Lol! All I got from that was a free sandwich and a drink at midnight lunch.
I almost signed up for a so called talent agency once because I thought I might try doing a fill in or two for the many films that were going on in NYC at that time. A friend of mine had done it and made just a little money but the work involved mingling with some, A rated at the time, famous actors and she had so much fun I thought I'd give it a shot. In the end I didn't do it because of the hefty price tag to join up with the agency. That just about covers my experience and involvement in doing imagery if I'm reading that right. This MIGHT be the B rated movie I was in below. It was called, for lack of imagination, "Drive In"!

As far as what else I am doing for my Identity and my future I would like to do a website with some of my art work on it . But I want to put my best work there and I haven't got to produce my best work thus far since I began college. My work I produce here is ok but always rushed to get it done and although I produced a tumbler last semester I would not want to show that work because it was of a more personal nature of my family done in a bit of a satirical way. I would not care to share that with anyone if I had my way except my family members. Currently I'm in the process of redoing some of it and then giving it to the member of the family I represented in the paintings. I would like to join a group of artists in my community in the future and work with and around these individuals possible doing some local art shows in or around Somerset county or Bucks county in Pa.

Read this.

My name is Clara.

I am a media junky. I loooove love love love love love me some media. As an artist and a writer media is a drug, sad but true. The crazy thing about media is that regardless of how much it is meant for us to consume, it inadvertently consumes us. I create art and write from various points of existence. I am affected by the culture around me, I am labeled by the imagery around me, I am built of pieces of media that have both consciously and unconsciously become part of my identity.

#startselfexplorationparagraph1.0

I am a woman of color living in a world that meditates its color friendliness inside of white walls. I am a woman who consumes media about the deportation of who could’ve been me just a year and a half ago. I am a woman who got married after Edith Windsor defeated the ban on LGBT marriages. I am a woman who lived through a 20-year family separation (thanks to the long process of becoming “legal”.) I am a woman who rants on Instagram and Twitter. I am a woman who believes abortion and birth control is A oh-fucking-kay cause without those women of color disproportionately lose access to social mobility. I would love to make Trump art but I’m keen on not getting deported LOL. Unfortunately, in these times free speech is not so free.

#Sad. <-Trump reference.

Now you have an idea of me. Welcome aboard. See that is what the media does to you. You consume me, I consume you. I predetermine the narrative I wish to share and you tacitly accept it. That’s the scary thing about the media, the more we consume it, it consumes us, it monopolizes our narrative. It consumes us to the point that Facebook now has a “suicide algorithm” to detect when, if and just how you might wanna deactivate your account, and I don’t mean Facebook… I mean this wonderful experience of one-time consciousness we beautifully overlook called life; worst part it does it on a basis of 0’s and 1’s. Not you, 0’s and 1’s.

 #existentialism #existentialcrisis #wtf

0’s and 1’s that is all you and I are in the blogosphere of media. You consumed my narrative. I consume your time. We all create our stories, put them on social media, eat our news, drink our friendships like a bag of chips and a bottle of Gatorade.

Want your mind blown? Your whole life is a giant media spectacle and you are its protagonist. Even what your eyes see is gazillions of images and scripts. Perhaps emotions are the hashtags. The filters are how we tell the stories, the faces you make and the empathy we seek for how our stories look best.

#mindblown #YouAreYourOwnPapparazzi

If you are not careful with media look at the following: Media is the chancla (slipper) and you are the cat. Be the chancla. Don't be the cat.

Who Do You Think You Are?

I consider myself an avid consumer of media. I listen to various Hip Hop podcasts daily and I also have my own rendition of a podcast. The name of my podcast is "Despicably Optimistic," our podcast is a blend of social commentary, music/movie reviewing, and eccentric humor. The general premise of our podcast is to make a positive out of any negative situation. I am also well versed in marketing, I held a marketing position at Jimmy Jazz for about 1-2 years where I served as a brand ambassador and sneaker blogger. Apart from my personality work I am also a seasoned foodie on Instagram, no pun intended. I have amassed over 79 thousand followers on the social media platform based off of my food pictures alone.

https://www.instagram.com/ramoncitoeldelapipa/

A vast understanding of media can provide great things for me in the future. I am an aspiring writing, I began writing  my first novel in 2017, entitled A Wise Man Once Said Nothing. My aspirations for this novel are very ambitious because I one day do dream of bringing this story to the big screen. Apart from writing I would also love a job somewhere withing Hip Hop journalism. I think it would be a great place for me to build relationship while also doing something that I love.

One project that I and my team are currently working on is transitioning our podcast from just audio  to also a video production. We partnered up a with a production company called Push.28 based out of Bloomfield, NJ. We hope to one day soon have our podcast on Youtube as well a all other major streaming services. At the moment we are only on soundcloud and the Apple Podcasts app.

https://www.despicablyoptimistic.com/

One of the many projects that I embarked on through Jimmy Jazz was a TV pilot that we shot for BET Networks. The name of the show was "Destination Phresh." My partner on the show was a young man named Terry Mcfly. Terry had a vast resume and many relationships within the Hip Hop media culture. He was also a Brand Ambassador for General Motors, so any city that we were in GM would give a Cadillac CTS to ride around in. Our show was going to be similar to Guy Fieri's Drive In's, Diners, and Dives, the difference was that apart from great food we would also visit the most popular sneaker boutique in the area. The Pilot unfortunately was never picked up by BET, and Jimmy Jazz's digital marketing strategies were soon revamped.

Introduction Post

Who do you think you are?

Our culture is heavily relied on media, I am an individual that does not revolve around the media. By observing my family or friends it really is time consuming. It takes away the act of interacting with another person in real life. I try not to take any part of the social medias or any platforms that will utilize my time.

I try to focus on what is important in my life. There will be times where I am dealing with media consumption. My role in that part is that I do not intend to use social media as much because it takes a lot of time out of my life. For an example, in the link below it is about how the media and technology can disconnect you from the real world.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7dLU6fk9QY

In middle school, I've experienced shared art through an app where you can display animations and it would inspire me to make some myself. At one point, I had an audience who would motivate me to keep going and who were also inspired by me. I constantly posted on the daily, it gave me a drive to make something that I had enjoyed and receiving feedback was great as well. Also, in the app your identity can be hidden. I had a sense of privacy through that app because I was not comfortable in displaying who I really was.

How the media fits into my life is how I present myself on those platforms, such as Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, & etc. On these social outlets, I do not put that much information about myself. I prefer others not to know about my business because I rather not hear unnecessary opinions because I find it irrelevant. If it's advice and motivation that will benefit me than it is fine. As for the future, no one can really tell what will happen, as of right not I do not intend to post any pictures of myself or my art but when I feel comfortable again, I would love to be active on social media.

Who Do You Think You Are?

Throughout my life, there has always been a strong media presence, whether it be for educational or entertainment purposes. Different forms of media are engrained in our society and it is hard to escape it. As a Graphic Design and Fine Arts major, visuals are important, and I am learning how to integrate them into media with more function. Throughout my courses, some form of media is used as a part of the learning process. It is tied into all facets of society.

I have distinct memories of where media has had influence in certain parts of my life. Although I liked to read, television was one of my favorite pastimes. Aside from the influence of my artistic family, media also helped feed my already existing interest in art and later design. The colors and stories of shows on kid’s networks, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, captured my imagination in a different way than books. The flashiness and excitement of The Price is Right and the whimsical, yet educational tone of Sesame Street helped plant the seed of my daily media consumption.

These shows had a direct and indirect influence on career choices, however, Pappyland is the children’s show that taught me how to draw. Every morning before school while eating my breakfast, I sat at the kitchen table with my little sketch pad, drawing along with Pappy Drewitt. Watching this show was a part of my routine and I learned to practice my craft daily at an early age. Television was also family time. We would actively participate in, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, as if we were contestants on these game shows. Having that time with my family created some of my most precious memories.

The type of media I find myself consuming the most today, is digital, more specifically YouTube. Although it can be addicting, YouTube has become a go-to source or a starting point of reference for many of my inquiries. If there is a design program I need to learn for a project, I go to “YouTube School”. With the information being shared, I can create solutions and further improve my skills. Graphic Design is a form of visual communication. It is our job to provide solutions to certain problems. As a design student, my eyes are being trained to notice things in that average person may not think about. The layout of the type, imagery, and content in written publications (digital and printed journals, books), infographics, posters, and video are used as a source of critique and study for design students to learn elements of design. The advisements and social media for most of our visual content are distributed through media. As a designer, media, whether it be digital or otherwise, will always continue to be a vehicle to push our forms communications forward and continue to challenge the status quo for many things.

It is a system of oppression which values the work of men over that of women, which privileges male culture and men oriented roles and tasks over that of women and women oriented tasks. It is a system of oppression that elevates men into positions of power and decision-making while devaluing or diminishing the contribution of or role of women. **Taken from MXGM Definitions**

It is a system of oppression, which assumes and accepts heterosexual relationships as the norm and values those relationships at the expense of others.
Patriarchy, arguably the first system of oppression learned by everyone, intersects with other systems of oppression such as white supremacy, classism and heterosexism to oppress Black women and Black LGBT/Queer people.

Racism is the belief that there are inherent differences in people's traits and capacities that are entirely due to their race, however defined, and that, as a consequence, racial discrimination (i.e. different treatment of those people, both socially and legally) is justified.

Racism is more than a matter of individual prejudice and scattered episodes of discrimination. There is no black racism because there is no centuries-old system of racialized subordination and discrimination designed by blacks to exclude whites from full participation in rights, privileges, and benefits of this society. Black racism would require not only a widely accepted racist ideology directed at whites but also the power to systematically exclude whites from opportunities and rewards in major economic, cultural, and political institutions. While there are Blacks with anti-white prejudices, and there are instances of Blacks discriminating against whites, these ….are not part of an entrenched structure of institutionalized racism that can be found in every part of this country **Taken from MXGM Definitions**

Sexism: The cultural, institutional and individual set of beliefs and practices that privilege men, subordinate women, and denigrate values and practices associated with women. Sexism is more than a matter of individual prejudice and scattered episodes of discrimination. There is no female sexism because there is no centuries-old system of sexualized subordination and discrimination designed by women to exclude men from full participation in rights, privileges, and benefits of this society. Female sexism would require not only a widely accepted sexist ideology directed at men but also the power to systematically exclude men from opportunities and rewards in major economic, cultural, and  political institutions. While there are women with anti-male prejudices, and there are instances of women discriminating against men, these ….are not part of an entrenched structure of institutionalized sexism that can be found in every part of this country. **Taken from MXGM Definitions**

Sexist oppression is any force or entity that limits the self-determination of women and girls. It is the exercise of male privilege (power and control), by individuals as well as the state and results in violence and abuse of women and girls. Sexist oppression is propagated by the state through policies and practices that adversely affect women. The result of these policies is the creation and expansion of an economic and social underclass of women who struggle to support their families while they are treated as expendable labor. **Taken from MXGM Definitions**

Sexual Orientation: Sexual orientation is the term people use to define what gender they are  sexually attracted to. A person who has a sexual attraction to members of the opposite gender is called heterosexual (or straight), while someone who has a sexual attraction to members of the same gender is a homosexual person. Also see pansexual, asexual. Sexual orientation is a continuum, not a set of absolutely different categories. It is not known what determines a person's sexual orientation. An inherent or immutable enduring emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to other people.

Social Power: Access to resources that enhance one's chances of getting what one needs in  order to lead a comfortable, productive and safe life.

Transgender: An umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or expression is different from cultural expectations based on the sex they were assigned at birth. Being transgender does not imply any specific sexual orientation. Therefore, transgender people may identify as straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, etc. This term can include transvestites, transexuals, female and male impersonators, drag queens, and those without a specific gender label.

Transsexual: Changing to another gender: surgically, chemically, and/or aesthetically.

Two-spirit: The definition of a two-spirit person varies across the Native American cultures in which they appear. In general, two-spirit people are born one sex, and end up fulfilling the roles assigned to both sexes, or other roles reserved for two-spirit people. Some people consider two-spirit a term that can refer to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, while others think it is best used only for transgender people.

Transphobia is the negative valuing, stereotyping and discriminatory treatment of individuals who do not conform in appearance and/or identity, to conventional conceptions of gender. Trans-identified (transgendered) individuals, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and their supporters are typically the targets of transphobia.

**This list is not exhaustive. If you feel a term should be edited, expanded or added here,  please let me know.
