Who do you think you are?

Media has been significant all throughout my childhood. My first language was Spanish and therefore I relied heavily on Media to learn English. I didn't have parent, older siblings, or cousins to teach me. Outside of School, I found myself learning from the television and it's shows. As a kid I was addicted to my TV, I was an only child for a long time and there weren't any kids living round me. I was completely attached, in a way it became a distraction. It was so extreme that I often would stay up watching shows, everything from telenovelas to Reba. It was through television that I started to understand the American culture, although today I realize that so many things I thought were true are false.

As I grew older I abandoned the the television, today I barely turn it on and heavily rely on my phone. I wasn't very active on social media, or any other outlet as it didn't have any importance to me. My first presence online was created by my best friend when she took the liberty to create a facebook account for me.  Today, I find myself always checking my phone for new updates and endlessly scrolling through instagram. I get most of my information online, news, events, and even inspirations that I try to incorporate into my own designs.  I can't escape it, it has become a replacement to the TV from my childhood.

Being part of the Design world, Social Media plays a huge role as it acts as self promotion to many designers. It's extremely important to showcase our work online as it acts as a portfolio, an easy access for potential clients to view a designer's style. There is a whole design world online, a big part of being a designer is knowing what's trending and the new movements taking place, in order to do this I must always be present online. However,  it also has a negative perspective as It can leave one feeling discouraged by comparing one self to another. There are small periods when I turn off my phone to take mental breaks, or else i'll find it hard to immerse myself into my own designs after viewing countless others.

I have started to realize I that want to take part in creating new media consumption, but I want to create art that changes the way media is portrayed. I want to make an impact, even if it's small, I want to know that I had an influence on what the media portrays for future generations. I want to showcase different cultures and promote unity.  I want to show what American culture really is, provide future children like myself with a truthful experience.
