FINAL PROJECTS:

SELF PORTRAIT and ARTIST STATEMENT due 4/26

MAKE SURE YOU POST YOUR FINAL ON THE BLOG!

1. Choosing any one or combination of processes including: paintings, video, performance, writing, audio, installation, or mixed media, create a self portrait.

2. Connect your final self portrait project to the readings, artists, examples and discussions throughout the course. Being sure to create clear connections to the course themes.

3. Write an artist statement for the project. The statement should be 500-750 words and explain your process, your inspirations and influences and must also reference the class readings. Please be sure to explain the following:

+ What is the form and content of your self portrait?

+ Why have you created the work and what are its connections to your biography? How does this current work relate to your previous work and your professional aspirations?

+ What elements from the course have you chosen to address in the process of your self portrait? What artists, writers, design or other media examples have influenced and are connected to your project?

4. Post your project and written statement to the blog. If your project is an object, you must document the project and post one or more well lit and edited images of your project to the blog.

5. Plan a 5-minute presentation to the class of your explaining your self-portrait and written statement. Be sure to be well-prepared, clear, concise, and enthusiastic. This is your work! Be confident! There will be 5 minutes for questions and feedback after each presentation.

Paintings for the Future/Spirituality and Identity

Reflect on the work of Hilma af Klint in the exhibition Paintings for the Future, at the Guggenheim Museum. Her work reflects among many things: a deep involvement in spiritualism (including theosophy), direct spiritual guidance and a belief in radical holistic connectivity. How can you explore these things that motivated her work and her life in your own identity? Using this week's readings to reflect on spirituality (and other readings you may find useful from previous weeks). Explore how these theories of humanity's connection to the universe may influence your own identity. Does spirituality play a role in your own work and in your projects? Please connect the work in the exhibition and the theories it highlights to frame your own self-portraiture projects and to reflect on the future.

2-3 double-spaced typewritten pages (with images from your museum trip included on an additional page) with as much specificity as you can. Please reference (with citations) two of the class readings. ALSO add it to the blog!

CLASS on SATURDAY April 6th! We are visiting the Guggenheim Museum on SATURDAY, April 6th at 4pm. This is the "suggested donation" day and there will be many people lining up to attend. Please arrive at 4pm (admission begins at 5pm). There will be readings due but there will be no class on Friday 4/5.

NO Class on Friday 4/5 but you must attend the museum trip on Saturday. If you cannot attend on Saturday, you must visit the museum on your own, take photos (including a selfie in the exhibition) and complete the museum response assignment due 4/12. See below.

Myths, Home and Self-Portraiture

Myth is a folklore genre consisting of narratives that play a fundamental role in society, such as foundational tales.

Please explore the work of Wendy Red Star and Kambui Olujimi at the Newark Museum. Recognize how the works address themes of identity, home, personal narrative and mythology. What are these works about and what narratives emerge upon viewing the works? How do both of these artists create, reference or respond to mythology in the works? Give some examples. Use photographs from your visit to illustrate references to specific works.

Every culture has its myths. How do these connect to the self-portrait projects that you are creating? Are there mythic elements that you would be interested in adding and what might those be? Explore identity and mythology in light of your own cultural heritage and the images and/or stories that you are developing for your portrait. How might your own projects connect to the work in the museum?

~One+ single-spaced typewritten page (with images from your museum trip included on an additional page) with as much specificity as you can. Feel free to refer to Greek myths, African myths, or any other cultural heritage of mythic stories and images. Printed and handed-in in class and posted to the blog to share with your fellow students.

2. Concept of the project and how it is informed by or connects to the course material.

Must be printed and handed in. The proposal is a part of your semester project grade. (which in total is 40% of course grade)

Constructing American Identity Exhibit at the Montclair Museum

Drawing on the artwork you visited in the exhibition, information materials and labels in the exhibition and referencing the reading Social Psychology of Identities by Judith Howard and optionally the readings assigned previously in class, please complete the following:

1. What does it mean to "construct" an identity? How does this concept connect to our class discussions on Friday, February 8th on Race, Gender and Power?

2. Looking at each picture in the exhibit, what are the elements depicted by each artist that conveys identity in each artwork?

3. Choose five examples that you noticed and identify (artist, title, date) and explain these pieces in some detail. Use these examples to relate to the article you have read and any of our class discussions. You may also refer to any of the readings previously assigned in your discussion. Please submit 3-5 double spaced typed pages (800-1200 words) about how you see the CONSTRUCTION OF IDENTITY occurring. Please also add this response as a blog post to the blog with images of the pieces you are discussing. Please take note of format issues with text and images and how the post appears once published.
