Getting to Know You

They say, “A picture is worth a thousands words.” Does that mean that there are 24,000 words in every second in a film? Obviously not. However, it’s easy to talk about yourself in 24,000 words or less. As a filmmaker I can even have an actor portray myself and I would create dialogue for them to act out everything that makes me, me. I did not go that route though. To describe who I am in my project, I use a visual and audio approach. With the help from the wonderful Julie Andrews, we begin with listening to the song, “Getting to Know You” from the musical The King and I. The reason I have this song playing throughout the video is because, I began my acting career as a child actor. At the age of seven, I was one of royal children in the King and I, I remember this song very well, I still sing it to this day.

We are now introduced to me. I sit calmly and quietly in my seat as the camera approaches me ever so slowly. In between, quick cuts showcase different elements that represent myself. I do not make the cuts jarring, nor do I make the representation confusing. Similarly to one of my favorite directors, Wes Anderson, I make my shots very direct. In other words, “What you see is what you get.” Another aspect that is similar to the auteur of Wes Anderson is the placement of the subject. Having myself being the main subject of the piece, I place myself in the center of the frame all the time. Any cuts that have myself in it, I place it in the center of the frame.

What made me create a piece like such is to show and have those understand that I knew who I was at a young age. As stated before, I have been an actor since the age of seven. Sports have always been an interest of mine, but my lack of hand-eye-coordination made a walking hazard sign on the field. While my friends were outside practicing for the championship game, I was practicing my lines with fellow actors and actresses for the opening performance.
Growing up, I knew that I wanted to work in Hollywood. Peers and adult figures tried to convince me otherwise, claiming the occupational stereotypes  for a Filipino is what I should aim for. Either I should work in the medical field or become an engineer. Fortunately, Science bores me, while mathematics and I do not get along. I bypassed the pressure and showed them as well as myself that I can make it in the entertainment industry.

Overall, a piece like this very reflective on self identity. It concludes myself as an individual who breaks stereotypical norms that were thrust upon him. Other aspects such as the car I drive, the fact that I love having the A/C blasting cold air no matter the weather outside, and my obsession for comics and Disney make me who I am today. I see things differently and I am not ashamed of the things I like. I hope you have enjoyed getting to know a little bit about me. I cannot wait to get to know a lot about you.
