Media consumption has come to largely contain social media. Technology is getting younger. Its readily available for children, and the younger generations are encouraged to learn from it and to learn about it. As a result, other than legitimized sources of information, much of the content online is made from adolescents. Apps and websites are catering to the short attention span of the new and impressionable generation by providing short and quick visuals. Unlike the past, people now have the ability to completely control what type of media they choose to expose themselves to and the freedom to engage with the endless abyss of technology.

At the time that social media sites came into popularity, I gave most of them a shot. What I found was over romanticized and needless competition between the pubescent residents of my hometown. More unfortunately, the competition was for “likes”. “Like this pic and ill like 10 of ur pics”, were the type of sickening negotiations my peers set on each other. As an adolescent I refused to partake in the futile evilness that is social media culture.

However, in this country media is shoved in your face, and it is nearly impossible to avoid it. In recent years Facebook and other media sources has turned into a truly endless void of memes, fake news, un-checked video articles, and chain mail. Everyone is both an amateur and an expert in every and all subjects. The comments section gives the user power to provide mediocre critiques, in which many will abuse to physically express unnecessary opinions that are better left unsaid.

Personally, being apart of the social media culture has never charmed me much, however, I have conceded to a few. Even though I do not offer much content of myself to the world, I still critique and consume a large amount. My confidence is not based from media, but as an artist it is a powerful tool for advert. I choose not to consume needless information and material about the lives from the peers of my peers. Instead I focus my consumption on news, art, family, and the entertainment of my guilty pleasures, of course.

Who do you think you are?

I am a creative. My passion is art in the form of music and lyrics. Music is how I express myself and how I connect with others. The exposure of media is important to me.  It is important to my craft. It helps with creating content that is relevant to others. My ability to connect with others is passionate to me. Being able to share experiences with those whom you have never had a conversation with is intriguing to me. Without media, the art of connecting with others would be impossible.
Not only am I a creative, but I am a parent. This aspect of my life is the most important. Although I have been a creative all of my life and a parent for only 8 years, hearing "mommy" is what puts my world into perspective more than anything. I have never known love to such a great magnitude until I became a mother. I have always paid attention to media, but more so after I became a mom. Knowing what is going on in the world today is a part of what helps me parent effectively. My goal as a parent is to expose my children to the positive aspects of the world and to shield them from the negative aspects.
I am a black woman and a feminist. I believe in empowerment. I believe in having the ability to do and say what you feel no matter your race or gender. Media is very important to this phenomenon. Identity and culture is what makes the world the way it is. Media has opened the door for individuality.
Media has shaped our past, is shaping our present and will shape our future. It is imperative to our being.

Who Do You Think You Are

2/1/2019

My role in media is a creator and consumer, I put out content of my own and learn from others who do so similarly. I have been sharing art since middle school, doing so has made a visual journal for myself to see how I have progressed. I check Instagram almost everyday, but I have learned to limit my time on the app. Too much of anything is harmful, and excessive time spent on social media can impact our standards and expectations of other people.

For my identity, I associate with what has stuck with me long term. Even though I was born in India, I have lived in New Jersey for the majority of my life and officially an American citizen. The artwork I showcase is what I consider part of my identity, despite it being a part of imagery as well. My culture envelopes both imagery and identity, giving me a sense of self.

I have chosen my Instagram page since it shows both my artwork and what I am currently doing.

Who do you think you are?
What is your role in media consumption, critique and/or media making? How much of your experience involves shared art and media events? How do the media fit into your life, your identity and your sense of the future? Use several examples to illustrate your description of your relationship to imagery, identity, and culture. Your blog post must be at least 4 paragraphs and you must include at least one link and one image.

Hello, I am Pocharaon Neammanee, but everyone just calls me Mos. I'm majoring in Journalism and minoring in Legal Studies. In terms of media, I'm a consumer, critique and hope to be more of a creator in media. Currently, I'm interning for the Rutgers Center for Immigration, Law Policy, and Justice. An important responsibility of that is to consume media relating to immigration and write about how it influences many perspectives on the discussion. I hope to begin creating media in terms of video and photo production to highlight the immigrant experience.

most of my experience involves media events. There is a lot of media coverage on the ongoing topic, therefore, it is important to be involved. My experiences with media are mostly involved in social media, specifically, Twitter. Twitter is playing a vital role in how many people today consume media and news. it became a forum for a diverse group of people to critique and involve themselves.

Media fits in my life currently as my consumption of news and media allows me to stay informed. in sense of my future aspiration, I hope to raise more awareness and tell stories through media. I want to do this by writing, and photographing the struggles and obstacles overcame of those immigrating.

I've chosen my twitter handle and an image of my volunteer work with refugees as my relationship with media. they illustrate my goals and consumption

Who do you think you are?

Hi, my name is Dax Davis and I have newly transferred student from Brookdale Community College. I tend to take part in a lot of media consumption like most people. I like to watch shows on Netflix or Amazon prime video or wherever I can to watch movies and shows. I also like to play video games more so when I was younger than now. I don't really create any media at the moment, but I major in video production so in the future I hope to have a job that allows me to create.

Like I said I don't really create any type of media at the moment but I dabbled in photography in the past. I'm kind of on hiatus for the time being, but the time where I was taking pictures was very enjoyable. We spend a lot of time looking at different types of imagery, so it was a very interesting experience when I started making my own content for people to consume. I would post my pictures to my Instagram and this was the only time I would use the platform. Reading the comments from my friends and even strangers and getting likes on my posts did have a kind of addicting feeling. This led me to understand why some people spent so much time on social media platforms like Instagram. Although some it can be unhealthy when people dedicate so much of their lives to media, it can also very positive and help you connect with people you may not have met ever in real life.

I think that media in terms of consumption is a large part of my life. This is something I would like to change over time. The reason for this is because I feel I waste time going on sites like youtube. For example I sometimes would be up until about 3 or 4 in the morning watching youtube videos when I should be sleeping. This bad habit affects my life because I tend to be really tired during the day and at school and I also sleep in a lot on the weekends. So hopefully I manage to reduce the amount of time spent on consuming media so that I can improve my life a bit.

Overall, completely avoiding media is pretty impossible in my opinion. Trying to get it out of your life completely can be just as bad as media taking over your life. I believe there is a healthy balance that people should try to achieve to not only live a healthy life but to also be informed on what's going on it the world.

Introduction

Hello my name is Ayah Elgendy and I'm doing a BFA in graphic design. I'm a Muslim, Egyptian, American who was born and raised in central Jersey. I love science and all things design. I really appreciate how design makes me think critically, conceptually, and visually about everything around me. I like everything from architecture and motion design to even sock designs. I value family/friend ties, my religion, hard work and kindness. My family to me are my best friends. Although we argue a lot, they are the closest people to me. The same goes with my friends, I treat them like family. I think I value hard work and kindness because one earns respect and another earns love. I look at my religion as a lifestyle, most of the decisions I make are based off of my beliefs. Overall I think it makes me understand why I am who I am. Media consumption definitely plays a huge role in my life, especially with my line of work. As graphic designers a big part of our job is to make difficult things simple for people to understand. We can do that through all forms of media like instagram, web design, commercial design, branding and marketing, motion design, written media and etc. I think that media consumption fills up 99% of graphic design. Media also plays a role in my social life for sure. I’m on instagram all the time. I listen to radio stations, podcasts, youtube, I read magazines, posts, and books. I watch tv, movies, and viral videos. I also use it as a way to creatively express myself, through photography. Media consumption definitely has a positive role in society. It acts as a form of communication and enhances relationships. For example, my cousins live in Egypt, and the first time I ever met them was in 2011 and I thought because my Arabic wasn’t that great and I had never seen them before, that we weren’t going to have anything in common. But when I spoke to them I realized that we were watching the same movies, listening to the same music and we new political situations in both countries. It was insane to me that through media consumption my cousins on the opposite side of the world had things in common with me. Media consumption is also great when it comes to giving you a voice. Standing up for rights and bringing people together. It keeps you informed about your society and other places around the entire world. It helps you surround yourself with the type of energy you like to surround yourself with. It gives different perspectives about different topics you might not have thought of before. I also helps us progress in technology. On the other hand there’s a negative part to media consumption. I think the number one thing is that it can be a HUGE FORM OF DISTRACTION. In all ways, it can distract you from your work, from responsibilities you have towards your significant other, or just your general responsibilities. One of the main ways every government in the entire world tries to distract people is through media consumption, and it works. It can also lower our attention spans. It keeps us from being able to communicate with human interaction. It can also attain false information because of specific biases. It can make us immune to catastrophes happening around us and around the world. For example, unfortunately, recently I’ve noticed there’s been a large amount of suicides and it’s almost like now someone passes away, we just scroll past. So it definitely affects us in a negative aspect. Overall, I think that there’s a good and bad side to media consumption and we need to work towards balancing it. I don’t agree with the two extremes of doing everything through media consumption vs. never having any media consumption ever again. I think that there’s really good positives to it and everyone individually needs to understand how to use it efficiently in our lives. https://www.instagram.com/ayah_elgendy/

Media. In terms of creating or critiquing, I’m neither one of those. I mean, I’ve never been on TV or made a YouTube video. However, I do consume media a lot more than what I would like to admit. I find myself surrounded by it everywhere I go. At home, at school and even at work.
To me, the media seems to be a distraction from my responsibilities. For example, at school I have an hour break in between classes. I could be starting my homework for the class I just had or working on a project for another class. Instead, I’d rather sit in the computer lab scrolling through my Twitter Feed or Instagram Timeline to see what’s up.
I recently decided to give in and subscribe to Netflix. Now I find myself spending countless hours catching up on shows that my friends have all been talking about. One night, I’ve managed to watch five episodes of Stranger Things in one sitting. It made me completely lose the notion of time, and at 3 am I then remembered that I had an 8:30 class the next day.
In the lamest of terms, I guess you can say that my Identity with the media are my social media profiles.
Honestly, I believe that America’s modern society has drastically changed because of the way we consume media. There was a time when people would go out with friends and enjoy time together. Now with the introduction of the smartphone and apps such as Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, modern society has allowed the media to change people's social life.
