Media. In terms of creating or critiquing, I’m neither one of those. I mean, I’ve never been on TV or made a YouTube video. However, I do consume media a lot more than what I would like to admit. I find myself surrounded by it everywhere I go. At home, at school and even at work.
To me, the media seems to be a distraction from my responsibilities. For example, at school I have an hour break in between classes. I could be starting my homework for the class I just had or working on a project for another class. Instead, I’d rather sit in the computer lab scrolling through my Twitter Feed or Instagram Timeline to see what’s up.
I recently decided to give in and subscribe to Netflix. Now I find myself spending countless hours catching up on shows that my friends have all been talking about. One night, I’ve managed to watch five episodes of Stranger Things in one sitting. It made me completely lose the notion of time, and at 3 am I then remembered that I had an 8:30 class the next day.
In the lamest of terms, I guess you can say that my Identity with the media are my social media profiles.
Honestly, I believe that America’s modern society has drastically changed because of the way we consume media. There was a time when people would go out with friends and enjoy time together. Now with the introduction of the smartphone and apps such as Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, modern society has allowed the media to change people's social life.
