Media consumption has come to largely contain social media. Technology is getting younger. Its readily available for children, and the younger generations are encouraged to learn from it and to learn about it. As a result, other than legitimized sources of information, much of the content online is made from adolescents. Apps and websites are catering to the short attention span of the new and impressionable generation by providing short and quick visuals. Unlike the past, people now have the ability to completely control what type of media they choose to expose themselves to and the freedom to engage with the endless abyss of technology.

At the time that social media sites came into popularity, I gave most of them a shot. What I found was over romanticized and needless competition between the pubescent residents of my hometown. More unfortunately, the competition was for “likes”. “Like this pic and ill like 10 of ur pics”, were the type of sickening negotiations my peers set on each other. As an adolescent I refused to partake in the futile evilness that is social media culture.

However, in this country media is shoved in your face, and it is nearly impossible to avoid it. In recent years Facebook and other media sources has turned into a truly endless void of memes, fake news, un-checked video articles, and chain mail. Everyone is both an amateur and an expert in every and all subjects. The comments section gives the user power to provide mediocre critiques, in which many will abuse to physically express unnecessary opinions that are better left unsaid.

Personally, being apart of the social media culture has never charmed me much, however, I have conceded to a few. Even though I do not offer much content of myself to the world, I still critique and consume a large amount. My confidence is not based from media, but as an artist it is a powerful tool for advert. I choose not to consume needless information and material about the lives from the peers of my peers. Instead I focus my consumption on news, art, family, and the entertainment of my guilty pleasures, of course.
